A practical planning rule is average daily usage × supplier lead time + safety stock. If you use 3 units per day, lead time is 10 days and safety stock is 10 units, the reorder point is 40 units.
Track raw materials and finished goods separately
Batch-based makers can have enough raw material but too little finished stock, or plenty of finished goods but not enough input material for the next batch. Separate those quantities so the reorder signal is meaningful.
Review the fastest-moving items every week
Update current quantities, compare them with reorder points, review whether demand changed and adjust supplier lead times when recent deliveries are consistently slower or faster.
Keep the minimum useful record
For each important material or finished SKU, keep the item name, current quantity, average usage or sales rate, supplier lead time, safety stock, calculated reorder point, unit cost and last restock date. Start with the items that can actually stop production or cause a bestseller to sell out; there is little value in building a complex inventory system for low-impact supplies first.
