What to include in your handmade product cost

A useful pricing estimate starts with costs that change when you make and sell one more unit. Enter the materials used in that unit, the time spent producing it at a labor rate you consider sustainable, packaging, any shipping amount you pay rather than pass to the buyer, and the percentage marketplace or payment fee. If you have meaningful per-order advertising, transaction, listing or fulfillment costs that are not represented by the fee field, add them to the closest cost input or include them later in a fuller workbook.

Profit margin is calculated from the selling price after the entered direct costs and fee. A positive margin does not automatically mean the product covers every business expense. Rent, software, equipment, tax, refunds, discounts, damaged stock and other overhead can still affect real business profit. That is why this calculator is best used as a quick first screen rather than a replacement for accounting.

The break-even estimate shows the price that covers the entered fixed-per-unit costs after allowing for the percentage fee, leaving approximately zero profit.

Should labor be included?
Yes when you want pricing to reflect the time needed to produce the item. Leaving labor at zero can make handmade products look more profitable than they are operationally.
